"Emotional" Debut Has Flagbearer Gros Relishing Olympics Experience

With an impressive 759 goals in 151 matches for Slovenia, Ana Gros stands out as the most seasoned athlete on the team debuting at the Olympic Games. Her illustrious career, which has placed her among the top scorers in EHF Champions League Women history, has now brought her to the Olympics for the first time. Before facing Denmark in the opener at South Paris Arena 6, Gros and her teammates were in awe, soaking in every moment and celebrating their achievement.

At 33, Gros is likely nearing the end of her career, making Paris 2024 potentially her last Olympic opportunity. Reflecting on her journey since debuting for Slovenia in 2007, she recalls how the Olympics once seemed an unattainable dream. However, hosting the EHF EURO 2022 helped Slovenia bond and improve, ultimately earning their Olympic spot through impressive performances in the qualification tournaments. Despite a challenging start with a loss to Denmark, Gros remains focused on the upcoming matches, emphasizing the significance of their participation. As she prepares to carry Slovenia’s flag in the Opening Ceremony, Gros anticipates an emotional experience, further marking her incredible journey in handball.
