IOC elects French Alps 2030 as Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games host

The French Alps have been selected to host the 2030 XXVI Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. This decision was made by the IOC Members today during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris. The vote was contingent on the submission of the Games Delivery Guarantee within the timelines established by the IOC Executive Board, as it could not be finalized before the host election due to constitutional constraints within the current political situation in France.

The Games Delivery Guarantee is expected to be provided by the Prime Minister no later than October 1, 2024, and must be ratified by the French Parliament by March 1, 2025.

The French Alps 2030 delegation, led by President Emmanuel Macron, demonstrated France’s full commitment to hosting the Games. The delegation also included Laurent Wauquiez, President of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Renaud Muselier, President of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and David Lappartient and Marie-Amélie Le Fur, Presidents of the French Olympic and Paralympic Committees.

IOC President Thomas Bach commented: “President Macron and all parties involved in French Alps 2030 have reaffirmed their unwavering dedication to the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. We have complete confidence in France to deliver an exceptional edition of the Olympic Winter Games, showcasing the same creativity, imagination, and flair as we anticipate for Paris 2024.”

President Macron stated: “France continuously strives for excellence with every sports event it hosts. We have faith in the future of our mountains and aim to support a model that is innovative, ambitious, environmentally conscious, and accessible to all.

“I want to reaffirm this morning the French State’s full commitment to organizing these Games. Paris 2024 will be a success, and we are confident that the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be just as successful.

“You can rely on us—we will be fully involved, and we are proud to back this bid for the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.”

A final report from Karl Stoss, IOC Member and Chair of the Future Host Commission for the Olympic Winter Games, highlighted the strengths of the French Alps 2030 bid. This commission, responsible for evaluating and monitoring interest in hosting the Winter Games and Winter Youth Olympic Games, noted that the French Alps project benefits from strong public and political backing, a proven track record in hosting high-level sports events, excellent venues, and the advantage of leveraging France's experience from Paris 2024.

Stoss remarked, “The French Alps 2030 bid is solid, benefiting from robust support and a clear vision for hosting responsible and sustainable Games that are open to everyone. The legacy of Albertville 1992 still positively impacts local communities, and the bid’s commitment to environmental sustainability and inclusivity was evident in our discussions with athletes, sports leaders, and public officials.”

Known as Alpes françaises 2030 in French, the bid aims to unite the northern and southern French Alps to create a central hub for winter sports, delivering significant social and economic benefits to the region. It will be the first Winter Games edition to fully embrace the principles of Olympic Agenda 2020 and 2020+5, as well as new sustainability requirements outlined in the IOC’s Olympic Host Contract.

David Lappartient, President of the French National Olympic Committee (CNOSF), expressed pride in the IOC’s choice: “We and the athletes have been working towards offering simpler, more responsible, and inclusive Games, aligned with the IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020+5. With France’s expertise in organizing major international events, we are committed to building the Games of tomorrow, benefiting Olympism, winter sports, and our mountainous regions.”

Marie-Amélie Le Fur, President of the French Paralympic Committee (CPSF), emphasized the opportunity to apply lessons from Paris 2024: “Organizing the French Alps 2030 Games will allow us to set a new standard, adapting to global changes and accelerating the development of sports for people with disabilities.”

Laurent Wauquiez, President of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, highlighted the responsibility to deliver simple and sustainable Games: “This victory is for our French Alps, a region passionate about sports and Olympism. Our goal is to provide a remarkable setting for a memorable event that inspires future generations.”

Renaud Muselier, President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, celebrated the achievement: “Secured in July 2024 after a 30-month effort, the Games will showcase a reinvented, simpler, and more cost-effective model. We aim to offer exemplary, sustainable Games that benefit our communities and citizens.”

The finalization of the Games Delivery Guarantee is pending due to constitutional reasons in France following the national election. Although the French Alps 2030 bid submitted a signed Olympic Host Contract before the IOC Session, the IOC will not countersign it until the Guarantee is received by October 1, 2024, and ratified by the French Parliament by March 1, 2025.

The IOC Members cast 84 votes in favor of the French Alps 2030 bid, 4 against, and 7 abstentions out of 88 valid votes. The 142nd IOC Session also approved the initial sports program for the 2030 Winter Games, including biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating, and skiing, governed by the relevant Winter International Sports Federations. Additional decisions on specific disciplines will be made approximately five years before the Games.
