THOMAS MUELLER RETIRES FROM THE GERMAN NATIONAL TEAM AFTER EURO 2024.


Mueller, who will be 35 years old in September, played a pivotal role in Germany's victory at the 2014 World Cup.


BERLIN: Thomas Mueller, the German striker, announced on Monday that he would retire from international football following a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, during which the host nation was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

"After 131 international matches and 45 goals, I am bidding farewell," Mueller announced in a video statement revealing his decision. Mueller, who will turn 35 in September, played a crucial role in Germany's 2014 World Cup triumph, including scoring the opening goal in their memorable 7-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals. Reflecting on his career, Mueller expressed gratitude, saying, "When I made my debut for the German national team over 14 years ago, I could never have imagined all of this." He added, "It has always been a source of immense pride to represent my country. Together, we celebrated triumphs and shared tears."

Mueller had hinted at retirement following Germany's elimination from Euro 2024, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the quarter-finals. Following the tournament, Mueller indicated he would discuss his future with national team coach Julian Nagelsmann to determine if stepping aside for younger players was the right decision. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer remains the lone survivor from Germany's 2014 World Cup-winning squad still active in the national team. In contrast to midfielder Toni Kroos, who announced his retirement from football before Euro 2024, Mueller will continue to play for Bayern Munich until 2025 under his existing contract. With only Lothar Matthaeus and Miroslav Klose having more appearances for Germany than Mueller, he ranks as the nation's sixth-highest goalscorer of all time.
