With the Summer Olympics in full swing, sports anti-doping agencies escalate feud

Recent years have seen the Olympics plagued by numerous sports doping scandals. Currently, two major global organizations dedicated to maintaining clean sport are embroiled in a feud. Many athletes express a loss of trust in the system that is meant to safeguard them from unfair competition.

PARIS — The conflict between the world's leading sports anti-doping agencies has intensified once again.

U.S. officials are now accused of improperly allowing American athletes to compete in "elite level" events despite tests revealing they used performance-enhancing drugs. Deals were reportedly made with at least three athletes who agreed to act as informants and assist ongoing doping investigations. Reuters first reported on these arrangements.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) claims that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) operated outside its authority by turning athletes into "undercover agents."

"WADA did not approve of this practice, which permitted drug offenders to compete for years with the condition they provide incriminating evidence against others," WADA stated.

WADA officials said they instructed USADA to stop these practices once they discovered them in 2021.

This latest conflict follows growing criticism of WADA’s handling of positive drug tests involving 23 Chinese swimmers, which were kept confidential, allowing the athletes to compete in the Tokyo Summer Olympics and the Paris Games.

USADA CEO Travis Tygart has labeled WADA's criticism as a "desperate and dangerous" attempt to discredit USADA. Tygart claims WADA was aware of the athletes' cooperation and that some athletes had been permitted to continue competing.

According to USADA, athletes working undercover while competing provided crucial intelligence that led to criminal charges.

Both organizations agree that the practice of letting proven cheaters compete in exchange for cooperation has ceased.

The dispute continues as Tygart advocates for significant reforms to WADA, with the U.S. Congress and FBI also investigating. WADA and the International Olympic Committee have countered, with the IOC threatening to revoke Salt Lake City's 2034 Winter Games bid if U.S. investigations and criticisms persist.

As the clash between these major sports organizations intensifies, many American athletes express growing mistrust in the system meant to ensure fair, drug-free competition.
